Choosing the right makeup artist

This week’s guest blog comes from MUA, Lorraine Wynne. Lorraine has been a Makeup artist for 8 years, covering Wrexham, Llangollen and Cheshire. Lorraine has a natural approach to makeup and a passion for makeup that enhances and empowers women to feel happy and confident in their own skin, making them feel their very best for their wedding day.

Deciding on hiring a makeup artist for your wedding? This is blog for you!

Makeup is a very personal thing.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes as far as makeup goes.

We all have our individual style and a certain way we are used to seeing our face look!

A general consensus amongst most brides is that they want to look like themselves on their wedding day but just the very best version.

Whilst others will be happy with a complete transformation, there are no right or wrong answers, it is simply whatever you feel happy and comfortable with.

Advantages of having a mobile makeup artist for your wedding day include

-You won’t need to leave your house or venue until you’re ready, providing a calm, relaxing morning.

-Professional products applied professionally will look great and last the whole day.

-You will have a trial run so you can be sure you are happy with your result.

-Your makeup will look fabulous in the photos.

-Less stress on the wedding morning.

-If you’ve a blemish you can be assured it will be disguised.

-You won’t have to worry about it going wrong, having to remove all your makeup and start again on a blotchy aggravated face!

When choosing a makeup artist there are a few key bits of advice worth considering.

Firstly, know what you like! Sounds silly, I know, but just an idea of whether you want natural look, a transformation or a defined look is a good start. Sometimes not having a per conceived image can actually help, it allows the professional to use their expertise and create what is most flattering to the individual. But just a guide of heaviness and the type of styling you would like is helpful.

When deciding if you’d like to use a particular makeup artist for your wedding day here are a few questions worth asking before you even contact them. Do you like the way they do their makeup? Look at past clients, did you like their makeup? Did they leave a review? Just answering these simple questions will help you decide if you’d like to check their availability.

When checking availability be sure to provide your wedding date, location of trial and wedding morning and size of bridal party members wishing to use the service as well as the time you would like to be ready for. A phone call is always a great way to get a feel for a person’s personality.

These correspondences are important, after all this person will be with you on your wedding day! Do you feel reassured? Comfortable?  Are they easy to talk too? If the answers yes, then it’s a great idea to get them booked in for a trial.

As a MUA I like to book my trials in approx 4-6 weeks before the wedding, that way the bride is very sure of all colour schemes and her likes aren’t likely to change too much in-between, although it’s completely up to yourself when you have your trial.

If you’re thinking “what if I don’t like the makeup? and then it’s too late to book anyone else! “A good makeup artist should listen to your likes and dislikes, and help you find your ideal look, just make sure you are honest about what you like and don’t like. If your worried about offending, please don’t, as your MUA will be more concerned with making sure you are 100% satisfied with your look, but specific points relating to the changes you would like will help you both reach the outcome you want quickest.

Pictures of what you would like are great, just remember that pictures are likely to be in studios using makeup designed for camera and whilst they are a great guide, taking the advice of your chosen professional will help you find a look best for your individual features.

It is also handy to either arrive with your normal makeup on or have a picture of how you normally wear your makeup so your MUA has a good idea of what your everyday makeup is like. I advise taking any pictures of your hair style for the day if you have any as well as any swatches of colour schemes you may have, as well as pictures of your dress, so your chosen professional can get a feel for your styling.

Finally, wear it! No greater test! Wear the makeup for the day, take pictures in various lighting, make sure you are still happy with the look created 10/12 hours later, give feedback to your MUA so she can make adjustments accordingly.

Happy Makeup-ing!
